Black belt Welburn gets kicks out of karate club
Saturday, October 08, 2011
Hull Daily Mail
IT has been four painstaking years in the making but now Karate instructor Trevor Welburn can finally see his vision coming to fruition.
Welburn's Karate for Kids classes have finally got underway at his new dojo on Harpings Road, Hull.
It has taken the Fifth Dan black belt four years and through two floods to see his dream realised, but he is now confident of turning his vision into a success.
Damaged in the floods of 2007 which hit the city, the building was sold by a brewery firm, who were unwilling to take on the £70,000 repair bill.
Spotting its potential, Welburn took on the premises with the idea of turning it into one of west Hull's premier karate venues.
Three years later, having funded the refurbishment himself, the dojo opened in November 2010, only to close a couple of weeks later when the bad weather saw pipes burst and the building flooded again.
Now Karate for Kids is open again, and this time Welburn hopes it is for good.
"We had some really bad luck, the freak weather was to blame and it has been difficult," said Welburn.
"It has been a testing time, but we've re-opened and the building is now fantastic with all the latest facilities for the kids.
"From the moment I first saw the property I knew it would be an ideal venue for a karate club.
"The response we have had has been terrific."
With classes on a Tuesday and Friday between 6pm and 7.30pm, as well as a Saturday lunchtime, Welburn is hoping his new club proves to be a big hit with the area's children.
"Some clubs are all about entering the students into competitions, that's not what we are about.
"We have four coaches here, myself, Oliver Dawes, Luke Conlon and my son Trevor, and the emphasis is on teaching discipline for the kids, but also about them having fun.
"We want to take the kids off the streets, give them something to get involved in and hopefully build their confidence too.
"As with all martial arts, we need to teach discipline too and that is a big area of the sport."
Free lessons are available for beginners, with Welburn offering the premises for adult classes and work shops in self defence.
